Artist Spotlight: Ruby Valentine

Meet Ruby Valentine, a powerhouse of talent, charisma, and heart. We recently sat down with her to dive into her musical journey, her passion for community events like Thanet Rocks, and what she loves most about performing.

We first shared a bill with Ruby at Academy FM’s Christmas Craft and Music Fayre last December, and it was one of those moments where you can’t help but stop and listen. Her voice lit up the room and her stage presence was unforgettable. As soon as her set finished, we went straight over and asked if she’d be part of Thanet Rocks. Thankfully, she said yes, and we’re thrilled to have her join the lineup.

🎤 About Ruby as an Artist

How did you get started with music and performing?
“From a young age I loved singing. My mum saw it and enrolled me in singing classes. I also danced at Star Stage School.”

How would you describe your typical Ruby Valentine set?
“It stretches from 80s dance-pop to modern hits. I’ve also performed musical theatre, rock, folk, jazz, R&B and soul.”

Who inspires you musically?
“I’m inspired by solo female stars like Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter and Billie Eilish. But I also love Michael Jackson, Arctic Monkeys and Gorillaz.”

What’s your favourite type of venue?
“I love proper stages, like Birchington United Services or the Space in Margate, because they make a performance feel more like a show.”

Do you have a go-to song live?
“I love singing ‘Mercy’ by Duffy, the crowd always dances and I adore the vocal runs at the end of each chorus.”

🌟 Career Highlights & Current Projects

What’s been a standout moment for you?
“Performing for Tracey Emin three times. She discovered me at Belle Vue Tavern in Margate and booked me for her TEAR exhibition opening and Christmas fair.”

Any new projects in the works?
“I’m working on acoustic duos, vocals with guitar or accordion, another with piano, and one with a close friend.”

Do you prefer pubs, festivals, or private events?
“I enjoy all gigs, but open-air events are especially exciting.”

❤️ Involvement With Thanet Rocks & Its Impact

Why did you decide to join Thanet Rocks?
“Neon Rush invited me after we met at an Academy FM event. When I heard it was for Pilgrims Hospices, I couldn’t say no. I always leave space in my diary for charity events, they resonate with me.”

Why are community festivals important?
“They raise money, but also bring people together and boost networking for everyone involved.”

🎭 Just for Fun

Any pre-show rituals?
“Steam, steam, steam! And sometimes hot honey and lemon if it’s cold.”

If you could duet with one artist, who would it be?
“Sabrina Carpenter.”
